Navigating towards digital inclusion in the Amazon

About the project

The Amazon Fiber project marked a milestone in Peruvian telecommunications with the installation of subfluvial fiber optics in the Amazon region.

In the first phase, 900 kilometers of fiber were deployed, which significantly improved the Internet connection in the city of Iquitos, which until then faced major access limitations.

The Peruvian company leading the initiative sought a strategic alliance with FYCO to have its support in the second phase of the project. This collaboration allowed progress in the additional deployment of 600 kilometers of fiber, and to extend the network to the triple border of Peru, Colombia and Brazil.

By providing its expertise in the logistics process and the supply of materials, FYCO became a facilitator for the operator to provide Internet access to rural areas in the area and connect its people to a digital tomorrow.

The challenge

Collaborating on the subfluvial fiber deployment project in the Amazon, with the ultimate goal of helping to reduce the digital divide in a hard-to-reach area, was a major challenge for FYCO.

In the past, no operator had shown interest in installing the infrastructure needed to deploy a fiber network there, due to the geographic complexity and the need to handle special and delicate materials.

The partnership with FYCO was key to enabling the operator to provide Internet access to Amazonian communities that, in addition to their geographic isolation, face economic challenges, high maternal and infant mortality rates, food insecurity and limited access to basic health and education services.

“Contributing to a project of this magnitude makes us proud as a company because it contributes to the vision we have of boosting connectivity in Latin America. Our experience, in terms of supplies and logistics processes, allows thousands of people to have access to quality Internet, accelerating the economic and social growth of these border cities”.

The strategy

  •  Tactical evaluation

As a first step, a thorough evaluation of the project was carried out, and alliances were established with factories and partners to optimize resources and expenses.

  •  Delivery planning

A material delivery schedule was then planned to enable the operator to organise its deployment and allocate resources efficiently.

  •  Inventory management

An inventory strategy was implemented, supported by a backup system, to meet specific operator demands, which ensured a quick and effective response.

  •  Technological diversification

The project was not limited to just sub-fluvial fiber deployment, but encompassed a complete connectivity approach and included FTTH network deployments with pre-connectorized solutions, which FYCO helped design, as well as the expansion of the Access Network through advanced technologies, such as dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and other active fiber equipment.

  •  Consistent communication

Despite the inevitable challenges that this project represented, the strategy was supported by solid communication and by providing continuous support to the operator throughout the entire process, which resulted in a fluid interaction.

“I have had the opportunity to see first-hand, on the Amazon River, all the work that the client is doing on this project. What struck me most was the passion of its collaborators.”

Figures

  •  600 kilometers of subfluvial fiber optics were deployed on the triple border of Peru, Brazil and Colombia
  •  120,000 home passed is planned between Iquitos (Peru), Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil), which represents a process of digital inclusion for nearly 300,000 inhabitants of rural areas.
  •  30 people from FYCO involved in this project
  •  It took 12 months to deploy 600 km of subfluvial optical fiber (between negotiations with the factory, import, procedures and permits with public entities, until the deployment of resources)

Results

  •  Significant improvement in connectivity

FYCO's collaboration in the deployment of subfluvial fiber optics made it possible to connect the areas from Iquitos to the triple border of Peru, Colombia and Brazil.

  •  Benefits for Amazonian populations

The project has already had a positive impact on the inhabitants of these areas, since it transforms communication possibilities and brings previously isolated communities closer to the digital era. It has an impact both in the social sphere, since the availability of the Internet satisfies different needs, as well as in education and health, and stimulates the growth of local economies in cities such as Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil), in addition to opening the doors for tourism development in the region.

  •  Example of strategic collaboration

The challenge-focused vision shared by both companies, along with fluid communication, managed to overcome geographical and technological barriers to transform the lives of those who live in this part of the Amazon.

  •  Regional expansion

The successful implementation of the project allowed FYCO to explore new opportunities in the region and evaluate other projects of similar magnitude.
