Optical signal loss? Find out what could be causing it

Likewise, splicing problems can also arise, and although it is common to have multiple splices along fiber deployments, the concentration of many of these in a particular location can generate signal loss. Performing splices is a basic, everyday process in these operations, but if it is not done properly, the performance of an entire network can be affected.

In times of teleworking, streaming and online gaming, optical fiber guarantees important advantages such as higher speed and low latency in data transmission with lower energy consumption. However, despite having the ability to improve the efficiency and productivity of different types of equipment, there are a series of factors that can cause failures in its performance.

Whether or not there is a suspicion of an anomaly with the network, it is advisable to perform periodic tests with equipment such as the OTDR to provide timely maintenance or detect the existence of a problem. This is a tool capable of calculating the loss of optical signal by measuring the amount of reflected light to accurately locate fiber breaks, bends, splices, connectors or degradations in the distribution network.

Common challenges in FTTx deployments

Thanks to their coatings, fiber cables are designed to withstand a variety of adverse conditions, but if they are not handled properly during installation, they can be damaged and their performance can be affected by common internal problems such as strand breaks and bends that exceed the macro and micro curvature radii causing bending losses (these radii may vary depending on the type of fiber optic cable).

Cleaning the connector ferrules is also essential for the correct operation of the network, since their operation can be affected by dirt, misalignment, scratches and even manufacturing defects. This is where the importance of testing before coupling and installing them stands out.

Although these are some of the setbacks that can occur in fiber optic network infrastructure, training and good practices during the installation process are essential to obtain quality results and avoid stress on the cabling. Within the telecommunications sector in Latin America and around the world, having qualified personnel will mark a key competitive advantage for positioning in this valuable market.
